2018 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Pessac-Leognan

One of the more notable successes in Pessac-Léognan is this 2018 thanks to its wonderful bouquet of red cherry, spring flowers, cedar and liquorice, graphite aromas and elegant earthy notes. With building tannins, a fresh, focused texture, and a great finish, it’s not for those looking for instant gratification, and I suspect it will need a solid decade or more of cellaring, but it will evolve for 50 years or more. 99pts Decanter

The Graves/Pessac-Leognan where our wine comes from was extraordinarily good. Wine Spectator gave the left bank 96pts one of the highest ratings in the last 20 years. Parker’s WA gave the vintage the same a huge 96pts. Today we have the highly acclaimed 2018 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte that has received huge scores. This is one of the leading estates in Graves. More than 600 years ago, the Du Boscq family homed in on a gravelly plateau that was known locally as “Lafitte,” but the estate has only truly realized its potential since Florence and Daniel Cathiard bought it in 1990. Smith Haut Lafitte has even joined First Growth Châteaux Lafite, Margaux, and Haut-Brion as the rare Bordeaux properties with on-site cooperages. It doesn’t get more hands-on than that, and the devotion to quality shines through in every sip. Antonio Galloni called it “flat-out gorgeous and very clearly one of the wines of the year.” With multiple critics awarding this 97-99pts, it’s sure to be a wise investment for any Bordeaux collector.
