2018 Louis Jadot Savigny-Les-Beaunen Les Vergelesses
Les Vergelesses (Aux Vergelesses) is a Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru appellation in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. It applies to both red wines made from Pinot Noir and whites from the Chardonnay variety.
The premier cru vineyards here are located in two distinct groups. One of these lie on the other side of the Rhoin on the slopes of Mont Battois, immediately between Beaune and Savigny.
Les Vergelesses is part of the group found on the (mainly) south-facing side of the valley. These sites are generally held to produce more robust red wines.
As its name might imply the vineyard lies on the communal boundary with Pernand-Vergelesses. Much of it lies above the Pernand-Vergelesses Île des Vergelesses Premier Cru. Rather confusingly, the latter separates the Savigny plot from Pernand-Vergelesse Les Vergelesses, which is also known as Les Basses Vergelesses.
Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses is also something of an outlier in terms of orientation. The plot lies where the valley opens out onto the plains between Beaune and Corton and the slope curves around, forming one side of another small valley running up to the village of Pernand-Vergelesses.
Therefore, the gently sloping vineyard has a southeast aspect. This is more or less unique among the Savigny Premier Crus.
Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s most important negociants, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with a portfolio that covers everything from inexpensive Bourgogne and Beaujolais wines to several grand cru wines, from the Côte de Beaune to Chablis. Unsurprisingly, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay feature heavily in the portfolio.
The house was founded in Beaune in 1859 by Louis Jadot, although the first vineyard – Clos de Ursules – was purchased in the 1820s. The headquarters remains in Beaune, although vineyard holdings have increased exponentially. Louis Jadot owns land in some of Burgundy’s most famous vineyards, including Le Musigny, Échezeaux, Chapelle-Chambertin and in the famously fragmented Clos de Vougeot vineyard. Louis Jadot wines are also made in Chambertin, Montrachet, Corton and Romanée-Saint-Vivant.
