2019 Bouchard Aine & Fils Pouilly-Fuisse
2019 Bouchard Aine & Fils Pouilly-Fuisse, Chardonnay from Burgundy, France
Winemaker Notes; Brilliant gold in color with green tints, this wine is elegant and fairly reticent on the nose, showing floral notes enlivened by aromas of honey. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with mineral notes and hints of hazelnut and grilled almond. A rich, luscious wine. 2019 Bouchard Aine & Fils Pouilly-Fuisse is the perfect accompaniment for shellfish, quenelles, fish, frogs’ legs, white meats in cream sauce and poached poultry.
One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn’t like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.
Pouilly-Fuissé is the appellation for the finest white wines of southern Burgundy’s Maconnais district. They are produced exclusively from Chardonnay grapes grown in the communes of Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson.
Bouchard Aîné & Fils is a large Burgundy negociant based in Beaune, with cellars in the 18th century Hôtel du Conseiller du Roy. It mainly produces wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The company dates back as far as the 1730s, when Michel Bouchard settled in Burgundy to set up a fabric business, before branching out into wine. By the 1860s it was trading across Europe and into Algeria and Indochina. Bouchard Aîné & Fils has been owned by the Boisset family since 1993. Throughout its history, the company has never owned any commercial vineyards, instead producing wine from bought-in fruit. This is in contrast to the separately owned, but easily confused, Bouchard Père et Fils, which owns the largest area of Côte d’Or vineyards of any estate.
