2019 Idda By Gaja Rosso Etna
2019 Idda By Gaja Rosso Etna- Italy Wine – Once again, right from the pull of the cork, the aromatics scream Sicily and reach across the table and pull you in. You can expect nuances of wild berries, black cherries, sarsaparilla, citrus, cinnamon, wild and stemmy herbs, tar, and smoke. This time around we would not necessarily use the word Burgundian, rather we would emphasize Barolo or Nebbiolo in the descriptor. It is simply a more serious and age-worthy release – more structure, more finely knit and focused, more precise, more gripping tannins. It remains high toned, with coiled concentration, while being succulent, savory, and delicious. CD
Some of the worlds greatest wines started out as collaborations between great winemaking families. Opus One and Dominus are two such examples where great French wine visionaries chose to make wine in a totally different place then they were familiar with, Napa and selected the experts in that place to make wine with. Today’s wine is one of the most highly anticipated wine coming out of Italy in some time. The great Angelo Gaja deciding to make wine on Mt Etna in Sicily partnered up with Alberto Graci, one of the greatest producers on Mt Etna to make wine. Today I bring you that wine the 2019 Idda By Gaja Rosso Etna. The wine is hard to get and absolutely fantastic.
Wines from Etna have become hugely sought after. The phenomenon has been called a ‘Wine Revolution’ and is the hottest trends in Italian wine. Mount Etna is a live volcano and is possibly the most exciting wine region in the world today. This is high elevation, volcanic soils, full of minerals wine country that is making wines that have spectacular complexity, glorious red and dark fruits, great intensity, layering of flavors and awesome length. This wine is a great example.
Etna is not just a volcano: it is a mountain that originated over hundreds of thousands of years of lava eruptions. The Sicilians attribute a female nature to it: a strict yet generous mother, which is why they call her ‘IDDA,’ meaning ‘SHE’ in the Sicilian dialect. IDDA is pure energy, it is land where every fruit ripens with many different nuances.
The problem with this wine is that everybody wants this wine. I was lucky enough to taste the wine yesterday and it stands up to the hype. Insane complexity and depth, this is pure, mineral magic in the glass with pinot-like elegance and Barolo like presence and length. It is a must try!
