2019 Vielle Julienne Chateauneuf du Pape Les Trois Source
2019 Vielle Julienne Chateauneuf du Pape Les Trois Source More cassis, morello cherry, Asian spice, and a beautiful sense of minerality and loamy earth emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Trois Sources, a full-bodied, concentrated blend of 60% Grenache, 15% each of Cinsault and Syrah, and the balance Mourvèdre. Coming all from the estate’s sandy soils in the northern part of the appellation, this incredibly concentrated, textured wine has perfect balance, building tannins, and a great finish. Give this beauty another 4-5 years in the cellar and drink it over the following two decades or more. Rating: 96+
On the palate, the 2019 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf du Pape les Trois Source reveals its true character. Great freshness and beautiful vibrancy captivate the senses, while serious concentration leaves a lasting impression. The tannins, although not as elegant as in previous years, exude a rambunctious energy that adds a touch of playfulness to the wine. This proprietary blend is a harmonious combination of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Muscardin, Terret Noir, Vaccarèse, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Picardan grapes, all co-planted and co-fermented. With an average age of 75 years, these vines contribute to the wine’s complexity and depth.
The Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chateauneuf is one of my all-time favorite Neufs and one of the greatest in the world. Over the past decade Jean-Paul Daumen has emerged as one of the most compelling winemakers in all of France. Daumen is one of the most meticulous viticulturists and winemakers in Chateauneuf du Pape. Taking advantage of his ancient vines in the Northern sector of Chateauneuf, and biodynamically farming the entire vineyard, he has produced extraordinary wines dating back to 1998 that have massive acclaim from the world’s most respected critics.. His winemaking philosophy is quite simple- old vines, tiny yields, no SO2 during vinification, neutral and no fining or filtration. His wines are benchmarks from the appellation.
