2021 Diatom Chardonnay Bar M Bar-M has an open nose of quince, warm hay, green apple and pear, baker’s yeast, acacia and dried chamomile with white peach and nectarine plus hints of lime peel and crushed stone. Light to medium-bodied, it has a wonderful core of spicy fruit and wicked minerality in the mouth, amplified by juicy freshness and a long, energetic, layered finish. Yum! WA

Greg Brewer is one of the founders and still the winemaker at the great Brewer Clifton, and his Chardonnays and Pinots, made alongside his colleague Steve Clifton (since retired) are some of California’s best and most sought after, and pioneers of single vineyard bottlings.  Some of my most memorable wine drinking experiences have come from their wines. Greg very quietly makes wines for his own label, Diatom, and for the money these wines rock.  Greg is a minimalist and perfectionist, so if you want perfectly balanced Chardonnay out of California, you absolutely must try this.  The Diatom Chardonnay Bar M 2021 is sourced from the stunning contiguous blocks of clone 76 Chardonnay planted over 20 years ago in the Los Alamos region of Santa Barbara County. The wine reminds of a $60 bttl of Meursault so precise awesome rich elegant fruit and very much alive on the finish. This is a great Summer Chardonnay. This vintage is not rated yet but if ratings are your thing the wine regularly gets 93pts by Parker and 93pts by Vinous. The wine has a cool wax seal that you normally only see on very expensive bottles. This is hard core quality made by one of the finest Chardonnay winemakers in the US and at $21.99 you score!
