2022 Nicolas Idiart Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc
2022 Nicolas Idiart Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc This Sancerre by Nicolas Idiart is produced from 25 to 30 year old Sauvignon Blanc vines. Grown on “Caillotte”, the distinctive white limestone soils of the Sancerre and aged in steel tanks, this wine shows the full range of finesse and elegance of this high-quality terroir. This wine displays a porcelainlike texture that carries verbena, lemon curd, white peach and gooseberry notes through the long, stylish, floral crisp alive finish.
Nicolas Idiart, winemaker and founder of Maison Idiart, grew up with a passion for wine, which he acquired from his father and grandfather. After graduating from winemaking school at Blanquefort in Bordeaux, Nicolas’ enthusiasm for Loire wines brought him to work in Chinon, Touraine, and Muscadet, with stints further afield in Australia and New Zealand. Never quite sure where his niche was, he moved in to the sales side of the wine business, mainly in North America. After 7 long and ultimately unsatisfying years of sales, he decided to go back to winemaking with an artisan approach to the terroir which first stoked his inspiration – the Loire Valley. From numerous contract sources he now makes outstanding wines from not only Sancerre, but also Chinon, Muscadet, and Pouilly-Fumé among others. This Sauvignon Blanc is produced from vines with an average age of 35 years old in stainless steel preserving the freshness and vibrance of the variety.
Of all of the French wine producing regions, the Loire might produces the greatest variety of wines. They range from still to sparkling, very dry and acidic to hearty sweet, and clear in color to a deep purple. The diversity of wine produced in this region is due in part to its dynamic climate, which ranges from Continental to Mediterranean. This region is best known for Sauvignon blanc, Chenin blanc and Cabernet Franc. The most famous areas in the Loire Valley may be Sancerre and Vouvray.
