Almaviva is one of Chile’s most prestigious and iconic red wines, produced in the renowned Puente Alto sub-region of the Maipo Valley. Created through a unique collaboration between Chilean viticulture and French winemaking tradition, Almaviva is a Bordeaux-inspired blend in which Cabernet Sauvignon takes centre stage, complemented by Carménère, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyards lie at approximately 650 metres above sea level on poor, stony soils at the foot of the Andes, where cool nights and warm summer days encourage slow, even ripening and exceptional balance between concentration, freshness and acidity.
In the glass, Almaviva shows a deep, intense and opaque ruby-red colour. The bouquet is layered and refined, revealing generous aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry and wild berries, followed by elegant notes of violet, cedar, tobacco, liquorice and subtle earth. With time in the glass, additional nuances of vanilla, cacao, coffee, graphite, gentle spices and forest floor emerge, creating an aromatic profile that beautifully combines ripe fruit with sophisticated savoury and mineral complexity.
On the palate, Almaviva is full-bodied, concentrated and beautifully structured, yet remarkably polished and elegant. A core of ripe cassis, blackberry and dark cherry is supported by vibrant acidity and refined, rounded tannins. Layers of dark chocolate, cocoa, liquorice, cedar, vanilla and subtle spice develop through the mid-palate, while the Cabernet Sauvignon provides depth and structure and the complementary Bordeaux varieties contribute aromatic complexity and texture. French oak ageing adds a luxurious dimension without overpowering the purity of the fruit. The overall impression is one of harmony between richness and freshness, power and finesse.
The finish is long, persistent and beautifully balanced, leaving lingering flavours of black fruit, dark chocolate, liquorice, cedar, tobacco and delicate spice. Fine-grained tannins provide a firm yet silky framework, while the wine’s refreshing acidity maintains energy and precision through the final moments. Its combination of concentration, freshness, structure and polished texture gives Almaviva excellent ageing potential, allowing mature bottles to develop increasingly complex notes of leather, tobacco, earth, truffle and savoury spice.
Food Pairing: This sophisticated Chilean Bordeaux blend is an excellent match for rich, flavourful dishes. Pair it with premium grilled steak, dry-aged beef, roast beef, lamb shoulder, beef short ribs, venison and other game meats. It also works beautifully with slow-braised meats, truffle or wild-mushroom dishes, hearty stews and roasted vegetables. For cheese, choose mature Cheddar, aged Gouda, Comté or other firm, full-flavoured varieties that can complement the wine’s depth and tannic structure.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to allow the wine’s fruit, oak and savoury complexity to develop fully. A young bottle benefits from 45–60 minutes of decanting, giving the dense fruit and structured tannins time to soften and allowing additional layers of cedar, tobacco, cocoa and spice to emerge. Serve in a large Bordeaux-style red wine glass to fully appreciate its expansive aromas, refined texture and exceptionally persistent finish.
