Rioja; Spain
This wine is a steal at the price. Absolutely insane quality at a great price. Spain is my go to wine region to find great red wine that do not break the bank. This wine got a massive 95pts by Decanter at the Decanter World Wine Awards, beating out hundreds of other wine, priced at double and triple the price. Bodegas Burgo Viejo was founded in 1987 when six wine making family’s decided to pool their resources, vineyards and expertise to make the best wine possible. The results have been spectacular, gaining a reputation for making great Rioja from the Tempranillo grape. They have absolutely nailed it with their Bodegas Burgo Viejo Rioja Reserva 2020. The wine is classically styles Rioja with its dried cherry fragrance, cedar notes, smooth tannins, and pure berry freshness, beautiful Rioja Reserva. The time in the bottle has softened out the wine making it superb to drink now and enjoy for the next ten years. The wine was selected from three vineyards near the town of Alfaro near Yerga mountain. Alluvial soils stress the vines to work for every ounce of concentration, making for beautifully balanced, seamlessly oak-influenced wines that can age beautifully. Parker’s WA comments that the wine of Bodegas Burgo Viejo are, “impressive and merit serious interest,”and “sell for a song”. We totally agree, taste the difference, perfect for the cooler weather ahead.
The nose opens with a classic Rioja profile—dried cherry, crushed red plum, and cigar box wrapped in hints of sandalwood, vanilla, and leather. On the palate, the wine is sleek yet structured, offering layers of spiced red fruits, balsamic herbs, and cocoa-dusted almonds. The wine is built on supple tannins, with fresh acidity that carries through to a long, savory finish tinged with clove, cedar, and orange zest. Drink now–2039.
Complex nose of blackberry jam, spice and dark chocolate. The taste is still fresh and intense with firm tannins that will guarantee the longevity for at least 15 years from the harvest year. Winemaker
