Red Wine From Mencia Spain
91pts Parker’s WA 40 year old Mencia vines. 12 months in French Oak
Brimming cherry, blueberry and floral aromas, this is a vibrant Mencia with polished tannins and acidity with a long, bright mineral finish.
A ripe nose of blackberries, dark cherries, dried violets, potpourri and sweet spices. Full-bodied with powdery tannins. Textured and creamy. Supple, chocolatey finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
The wine is aged for two months with its own lees to finally enter French oak barrels (10-12 months) resulting in polished tannins and a long, bright mineral finish.
A family-run winery, winegrowers to the core and vintners of vines, Casar de Burbia starts with Nemesio Fernández Bruña – the winery’s first generation. In 1989, he decided it was time to make his childhood dream come true and started to buy old vineyards in El Bierzo. Obsessed by the altitude and freshness, he was focused on finding mountain plots which at that time everyone else had abandoned because of the high cost and low selling price of grape production. Now with 26 hectares of vineyards located in the Valtuille de Arriba mountain area NW Spain, Isidro Fernandez, the youngest of Nemesio’s three children, has taken over where his father left off. This winery ethos is to remain faithful to certain principles; Respect for our land and keeping terroir and its representativeness centre stage in each wine to maintain the legacy of our vineyards from generation to generation.
