Red Wine from Margaux, Bordeaux, France
The 2020 Ferrière is tremendous. Dark fruit, lavender, gravel, incense and dark spice are some of the many notes that develop. A wine of vertical, explosive energy, Ferrière is fabulous. The tannins are bruising today, so readers will have to be patient, but all the ingredients are there for the 2020 to be superb. There is a feeling of unrestrained wildness in the Ferrière that is hugely appealing. This blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, derived from a very high proportion of old vines, is a real success, but it will require patience. Drink after 2025.
Château Ferriere was one of the more obscure Classified Growths in the Médoc, largely due to their decision to opt out of the négociant system for several years and sell their wines directly to French restaurants. Production was small, and there wasn’t a lot of wine to sell. This is starting to change, however. Under the leadership of the ambitious Claire Villars Lurton, Château Ferriere has turned around in quality and viticultural practices, making the Third Growth property a hidden gem for bargain hunters.
