A family-run property for four generations, Château Haut-Pezat, located some 30 miles east of Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Dordogne River, it was founded in 1896. The vineyard is situated at the foothills of Saint-Emilion, on the ancient plateau overlooking the valley of the Dordogne on the South tip of the Saint-Emilion appellation area. The 20 acre estate has mature vines averaging 50 years of age. This 2015 is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc aged 12 months in 40% new oak barrels.
Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 90 points saying “Richly endowed with spice and wood-aging flavors, this is a firm and toasty wine. In many years, the wood would have been too much, but not in this vintage. The black fruit weight will balance with the wood as it ages to give an elegant, juicy wine ready to drink from 2022.”
and Vinous also scored it 90 saying “The 2015 Haut-Pezat, matured in one-third new oak, has a wonderful fresh and lively bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and vanilla scents, rose petals and violet following after. The palate is very well balanced with succulent tannin, crisp acidity, very caressing in the mouth with a hint of dark chocolate towards the finish. Superb.”
James Suckling scored it 91 and said “Perfumed aromas of fresh flowers and dark fruits. Some citrus peel. Full-bodied, tight and focused with pretty fruits and a crisp, clean finish. Needs two or three years to soften but already very pretty.”
