The Cote de Nuit, the northern part of Burgundy above Beaune, is home to the great red Burgundy’s. One of the finest, prized appellation is Nuit St George and one of the finest producers of Nuit St Georges is Domaine Henri Gouges. Today we bring you one of their famous wines, getting a huge 95pts by Wine Spectator from a great vintage 2022, that received a huge 98pt by Wine Spectator for the vintage and 95pts by Parker’s WA. Henri Gouges inherited 9 hectares of prime Nuits-St-Georges vineyards just after the First World War and expanded his holdings significantly between 1920 and 1934. Today, the Domaine includes 14.5 hectares, including seven of the best-positioned 1er crus. This historic producer is famous for powerful, age-worthy Pinot Noirs and one of their great wines is the Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru “Clos des Porrets St-Georges” 2022. What elevates “Clos des Porrets St-Georges” is that it is a 3.4 hectare monopole vineyard which means the entire designated vineyard is owned and controlled by a single winery, a rare situation (especially in fragmented regions like Burgundy) that allows one producer exclusive authority over cultivation and winemaking, leading to unique, consistent, and often highly prized wines. Wines from this vineyard combine power and depth superbly well and with 2022 took this quality we all look for in great red Burgundy to another level. This is a wine that will reward and improve with time and I recommend laying down to experience its true greatness. This wine is what great red Burgundy is all about. We have secured a great price. Unfortunately, quantities are limited.
Lush, juicy and seductive, this red features blackberry, black currant, blueberry, iron and earth aromas and flavors. Quickly tightens up courtesy of the solid structure, with fine promise for its evolution. Offers terrific balance and length. Best from 2029 through 2047. 95pts WS
