Mountain Napa Cab, 95pts, All-time Great Vintage At An Amazing Price.
Maxville is in Chiles Valley which finds itself at 1000 feet above the Napa floor. named after Col. Joseph Chiles, who first came to settle in California in 1841. He went north from Monterey and he crossed over Rutherford. He ascended the hills, found a beautiful isolated narrow valley and decided to settle there. In 1949 Charles Simmons purchased land in Chiles Valley as a summer camp for children. In 1974, vineyards were planted on the property for the first time. Chiles valley was incorporated into Napa at this time. The oldest vines on the Maxville estate date back to this period. Chiles today makes great Cabernet where you find great wines made by the likes of Conn Creek, Volker Eisele, Maroon and Maxville. A hidden treasure for high elevation mountain Napa Cab. Today’s wine, the Maxville The High Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2023, is a striking expression of Maxville mountain-grown fruit. Winemaker is Jeff Owens made wines for the PlumpJack Group for 17 years and was founding head winemaker for Odette where he made his first 100-point scoring Napa Cab. The wine reminds me of Cabernet from Howell Mountain but can be had at a much lower price and this wine is a great example of this. Now the 2023 vintage which is going down as one of the greatest vintages ever in Napa. It is being called a ‘vintage of a lifetime’. Decanter magazine, ‘2023 was as perfect as any Napa vintage in living memory.” I have been on the hunt for great Napa Cabs from the vintage and after tasting this wine, blew me away. The hunt was on to get some at a great price. We have succeeded; the wine sells at the winery for $55 a bottle and retails anywhere between $42 to $65 a bottle. The wine reveals a deep garnet hue, inviting with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum, and wild blackberry. Subtle notes of graphite, cedar, and baking spice lend complexity, layered with a hint of dried sage that reflects the valley’s untamed landscape. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely structured, with concentrated dark fruit flavors supported by velvety tannins and vibrant acidity. A graceful balance of richness and freshness carries through a long, elegant finish, marked by echoes of mocha and tobacco.
