Tarrawatta ‘Ambervale’ Grenache is an expressive single-vineyard Grenache from Eden Valley in South Australia, crafted from old, dry-grown vines at the Ambervale vineyard. The vineyard’s Grenache vines, planted in the late 1960s, produce naturally concentrated fruit with remarkable depth and character. This elegant yet powerful red showcases the distinctive South Australian expression of Grenache, balancing ripe red and dark fruit with savoury complexity, vibrant acidity and fine, chalky structure.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep crimson hue with an alluring aromatic profile of ripe plum, strawberry, red berries and violet, complemented by subtle minty and musky herbal notes. Layers of aniseed, spice and earthy nuances add complexity, while hints of dark chocolate, roasted walnut and gentle toast contribute a rich, sophisticated dimension. Earlier vintages have also shown black cherry, raspberry, vanilla and clove characteristics, adding further depth to the wine’s aromatic spectrum.
On the palate, Tarrawatta ‘Ambervale’ Grenache is generous, textured and beautifully concentrated, delivering abundant red berry and plum flavours supported by lively, persistent acidity. Its viscous, almost silky texture gives the wine an appealing richness, while fine chalky tannins provide structure without overwhelming the fruit. Dark chocolate, mocha, aniseed, roasted nut and delicate toasted-oak nuances emerge through the mid-palate, creating an intricate balance between ripe fruit, savoury depth and refined oak character.
The finish is long, fresh and persistent, with pronounced acidity carrying the flavours through to lingering notes of plum, red berries, dark chocolate, spice and aniseed. The combination of concentrated fruit, mineral-chalky texture and fine tannins gives the wine both immediate appeal and the structure to develop further with careful cellaring. The 2022 vintage, for example, has been described with deep crimson colour, minty and musky plum character, dark chocolate and persistent fresh acidity.
Food Pairing: This Grenache pairs beautifully with grilled and roasted meats, especially beef, lamb and pork. Its ripe fruit and savoury complexity also complement slow-cooked lamb shoulder, roasted poultry, herb-crusted pork, barbecue dishes and rich meat stews. For a more indulgent pairing, serve it alongside mature hard cheeses or blue cheese, where the wine’s fruit concentration and acidity provide an excellent counterpoint to the richness of the cheese.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to allow the wine’s fruit, spice and savoury character to fully express themselves. Young bottles benefit from 30–45 minutes of breathing, while a gentle decant can help reveal additional layers of plum, dark chocolate, spice and mineral complexity. Use a large red-wine glass to encourage the aromatic profile to open and to showcase the wine’s generous texture and lingering finish.
