Tarrawatta Godswalk is the flagship red wine of Tarrawatta, crafted in Eden Valley, South Australia, as a highly limited expression of the estate’s finest fruit. Named after the legendary champion stallion associated with neighbouring Lindsay Park, Godswalk represents the pinnacle of the Tarrawatta range. Rather than following a fixed recipe, each vintage is assembled from the finest barrels selected for their individual quality and, more importantly, how beautifully they work together as a complete wine. The blend is centred on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the inaugural 2018 release composed of approximately 70–75% Shiraz and 25–30% Cabernet Sauvignon.
In the glass, Godswalk reveals a deep crimson to dark ruby colour, leading into an intense and layered aromatic profile. Ripe black cherry, blackberry, plum and elderberry mingle with floral notes, pepper, mint and subtle herbal nuances. Deeper layers of dark chocolate, mocha, espresso, walnut, liquorice and black truffle add remarkable complexity, while carefully integrated cedar and toasted-oak aromas contribute a polished, luxurious character. The wine’s aromatic depth reflects the combination of old-vine Shiraz and elevated Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from Tarrawatta’s Eden Valley vineyards.
On the palate, Tarrawatta Godswalk is rich, concentrated and impressively structured, yet retains an elegant sense of balance. The generous dark-fruit core is layered with juicy blackberry, black cherry and plum flavours, followed by nuances of dark chocolate, coffee, mocha, walnut and liquorice. Polished yet firm tannins provide energy and shape, while vibrant acidity keeps the wine fresh beneath its powerful fruit concentration. Subtle earthy, peppery and mineral notes add savoury complexity, and the carefully handled oak brings layers of cedar and spice without overpowering the fruit. The result is a full, sophisticated red with impressive depth and a seamless interplay between power, richness and finesse.
The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, carrying flavours of dark berries, bittersweet chocolate, espresso, liquorice and cedar well beyond the final sip. Fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity maintain a firm, precise structure, while earthy and dusty mineral nuances gradually emerge at the close. The 2018 vintage was praised for its polished tannins and remarkable length, while later vintages have shown the same signature concentration and dark-chocolate richness. With its combination of power, complexity and structure, Godswalk is a wine that can be enjoyed now but also rewards careful cellaring.
Food Pairing: This powerful Australian red is ideally suited to rich and flavourful dishes. Pair it with grilled ribeye, premium steaks, roast beef, beef short ribs, slow-roasted lamb and Australian-style barbecue. Its dark fruit, savoury character and firm tannins also complement venison, braised meats, rich mushroom dishes and hearty stews. For cheese pairings, choose mature cheddar, aged hard cheeses or other strongly flavoured varieties that can stand alongside the wine’s concentrated fruit and dark chocolate character.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to allow the wine’s fruit, spice and savoury complexity to develop fully. Because of its concentration and structure, a young bottle benefits from 30–60 minutes of breathing, with decanting particularly useful for revealing additional layers of dark fruit, mocha, liquorice and cedar. Serve in a large Bordeaux-style red wine glass to give the aromas sufficient room to open and to fully appreciate the wine’s long, structured finish.
