VILLA TRASQUA CHIANTI CLASSICO ‘GRAN SELEZIONE’ R
Villa Trasqua Chianti Classico ‘Gran Selezione’ is a sophisticated and expressive Tuscan red that captures the character of the historic Chianti Classico territory around Castellina in Chianti. Crafted primarily from carefully selected Sangiovese, this prestigious Gran Selezione reflects the estate’s oldest and most prized vineyard parcels, where the combination of elevation, exposure and distinctive Tuscan soils encourages grapes of remarkable concentration and aromatic complexity. Fermentation takes place in large wooden vessels with extended skin contact, followed by approximately 30 months of ageing in French-oak tonneaux and further bottle maturation. The result is a structured yet elegant wine with impressive depth, freshness and the savoury character associated with great Sangiovese.
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep, vibrant ruby-red colour with subtle garnet reflections. The bouquet is intense and layered, opening with aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, black mulberry and ripe black cherry. Elegant balsamic nuances of eucalyptus and bay leaf add freshness, while deeper notes of liquorice, black pepper and nutmeg introduce a distinctive spicy character. As the wine opens further, sophisticated aromas of coffee, cocoa, vanilla and subtle toasted oak emerge, creating a complex aromatic profile that balances ripe fruit with Mediterranean herbs, balsamic freshness and warm spice.
On the palate, Villa Trasqua Gran Selezione is rich, enveloping and beautifully structured, with concentrated dark and red fruit supported by vibrant acidity and finely integrated tannins. Blackberry, black cherry, blueberry and ripe plum form the expressive fruit core, while liquorice, black pepper, nutmeg and balsamic herbs add savoury depth. Subtle flavours of dark chocolate, cocoa, espresso and vanilla develop across the palate, reflecting the wine’s extended maturation in French oak. The tannins are firm yet polished, providing definition and structure without overwhelming the fruit, while the lively acidity keeps the wine energetic, balanced and distinctly Tuscan.
The finish is long, savoury and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of blackberry, black cherry, liquorice, cocoa, coffee, spice and balsamic herbs. Its combination of concentrated fruit, polished tannins and fresh acidity gives the wine impressive length and balance. With further bottle ageing, additional nuances of tobacco, leather, dried flowers, forest floor and mature spice can emerge, adding another dimension to its already complex character. The overall impression is elegant and powerful, with the traditional soul of Chianti Classico expressed through a refined Gran Selezione style.
Food Pairing: This Gran Selezione is an excellent companion to classic Tuscan and Italian cuisine. Pair it with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, grilled ribeye, roast beef, braised beef, lamb, venison and wild boar. Its bright acidity makes it particularly well suited to pappardelle with wild-boar ragù, rich meat sauces, porcini mushrooms, truffle dishes and slow-cooked game. It also pairs beautifully with Tuscan sausages, roasted vegetables and aged cheeses such as Pecorino di Pienza and Parmigiano-Reggiano.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to reveal its dark fruit, balsamic freshness, spice and savoury complexity. A young bottle benefits from 45–60 minutes of breathing or decanting, allowing the tannins, oak and aromatic layers to integrate. Mature vintages should be decanted more gently to separate any sediment while preserving their developed aromas. Serve in a generous Bordeaux or large Burgundy-style red-wine glass to allow the Sangiovese to fully express its depth, elegance and persistent finish.
