2018 Domaine de Montille Volnay Taillepieds
2018 Domaine de Montille Volnay Taillepieds; Burgundy, France
Winemaker Notes; Volnay “Les Taillepieds” has little to envy the great wines of the Côte de Nuits : it is a model of aromatic purity, of precision and of structural exactness. The nose is highly defined, precise, pure, often floral and always mineral and spicy. The mouthfeel is robust with a tannic frame that is strict, dense and minerally. All of these elements – the minerality, the purity, the structure and the elegance, evoke the image of a Cistercian building, like the abbeys that seem to defy time. Effectively, a “Taillepieds” can age and shine for decades.
Pinot Noir is the dominant red wine grape of Burgundy, now adopted (and extensively studied) in wine regions all over the world. The variety’s elusive charm has carried it to all manner of vineyards. These extend from western Germany (as Spätburgunder) and northern Italy to Chile, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. California, Oregon and New Zealand are arguably the greatest centers for the grape outside its home territory. However great Pinot Noir is made in all of these territories.
On the hillsides between Pommard and Meursault, Volnay is one of two villages in the Côte de Beaune that is recognized for its extraordinary Pinot Noir. Pommard is the other; the rest of the villages are most known for some of the most exceptional Chardonnay in the world. While Volnay Pinot Noir tends to be light in color and more delicate than that of Pommard, they typically stand on par with each other in regards to quality and demand.
