2019 Chateau Saintayme Grand Cru
2019 Chateau Saintayme Grand Cru Black chocolate, baked earth, liquorice root and silky smooth tannins greet you on the first attack of this wine. I’ve never found this the easiest to love of the Durantou range but it is strikingly successful in 2019. Silky and yet slatey in texture, this both eases you through the palate and pulls you up short, slowing things down. Sparks of fresh minerality accompany the pulsing blueberry and raspberry fruits, and the juicy finish makes this one to look out for. 94pts Decanter
The 2019 Saintayme is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2019 offers up an exciting mélange of dark cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and dark spice. I would cellar the 2019 for at least a few years. This is an especially serious edition of the Saintayme. All the elements are impeccably balanced. Tasted two times. 93pts Vinous
This is racy and really fine with beautiful, polished tannins that run the length of the wine, It’s medium-bodied and really energetic. Hints of nutmeg. Give it a year or two, but hard to resist. 93pts Suckling
This wine is a steal for what’s in the bottle. Plus it is the last vintage made by this great winemaker with the passing of Mr Durantou. Denis Durantou can only be described as a Master Bordeaux Winemaker. He is one of the very few rock stars in Bordeaux, whatever he makes turn to gold. He has mastered all the great appellations. His 2012 Chateau L’Eglise Clinet was the only wine from the vintage to score 100pts by Parker. Today I bring to you Mr. Durantou’s personal property from St Emilion, his pride and joy from the great 2019 vintage. 2019 is a great vintage, could be one of the greatest ever, rivalling the great 2016’s and believed to be even more consistent. The 2019 Chateau Saintayme Grand Cru is spectacular Bordeaux that has received excellent press. Being Durantou’s last vintage makes the wine all that more disireable and collectible. This is a great value from such a great vintage and such a great winemaker. The wine is starting to drink but will cellar well with the greatness of the vintage, a fleshy style of St Emilion, black fruits, hints of smoke and kirsch. The vineyard of Saintayme is located in the increasingly popular commune of Saint Etienne de Lisse. The cooler soils of that sector are also the home for Valandraud and Chateau Fleur Cardinale. The vines of Saintayme are in one single plot. The terroir is limestone, clay and gravel soils. The vineyard is planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine of Saintayme is produced by the same team that makes all the wines for Denis Durantou. This wine is a wow! I have thirty five cases to offer. This is a no-brainer buy for those looking for Bordeaux of the highest caliber at a great price!
