Nittardi Gran Selezione 2021 

This wine is an absolutely brilliant expression of Sangiovese. Reminds of Brunello greats like Valdicava and Super Tuscans like Cepparello. I strongly recommend an absolute at the price for what’s in the bottle. Some of the greatest world class wines coming out of Tuscany are coming out of the Chianti Classico Zone. There is a new classification of quality for the finest wines and it is called Gran Selezione. It is a step up from Chianti Classico Riserva and represents the absolute finest possible quality, the oldest, finest vines from the finest rows of the finest vineyard, made in tiny quantities and only made in best vintages. They rival the finest expressions of Sangiovese made and find themselves competing and being compared to the best from Brunello. The 2021 Nittardi Gran Selezione is an absolute stunner. Nittardi dates back to the 16th century. The property was owned by Michelangelo Buonarroti who, in 1549, while finishing the Sistine Chapel, wrote to his nephew Lionardo: “I’d prefer two casks of wine rather than eight shirts.” On that same occasion, Michelangelo also sent Nittardi wine to Rome as a “genuine gift to the Pope Paolo III”. Today Nittardi has become one of the finest wine producers in Tuscany. Their winemaker is the great Carlo Ferrini, possibly the finest maker of Super Tuscans and Brunello in all of Italy. He makes some of the greatest wines: Casanova di Neri Brunello, Fonterutoli, Orma, Sette Ponti, Brancaia, Brolio, Petrolo and La Massa and he makes Nittardi. The wine comes from the all-time great 2021 vintage for Tuscany, considered one of the finest ever from Tuscany getting 98pts Wine Spectator and Decanter. Nittardi Gran Selezione 2021 is made exclusively from the best Sangiovese grapes and is only produced in great vintages. It perfectly represents the terroir of Nittardi and skillfully combines the expertise of the Nittardi team with the philosophy of chief oenologist Carlo Ferrini.
