In Europe, much of the summer was marked by dank and humid conditions, ideal for the fruit fly drosophila suzukii. The fly plays havoc with grapes and other fruit crops when the females pierce the fruit and lay their eggs in them, often alongside a healthy dose of acetic acid. Infected fruit is prone to sour rot and often take on an undesirable vinegar-like quality.
