Jim Barry ‘The Armagh’ Shiraz is one of Australia’s most celebrated single-vineyard Shiraz wines, produced from the historic Armagh vineyard in Clare Valley, South Australia. First released in 1985, the wine is made from 100% Shiraz grown on low-yielding vines planted in 1968. The north-west-facing vineyard, with its sandy, gravelly soils and significant day-to-night temperature variation, produces fruit of exceptional concentration while retaining the freshness and structure characteristic of Clare Valley. The Armagh has earned a reputation as one of Australia’s finest and most age-worthy Shiraz wines and has been classified as “Exceptional” in Langton’s Classification since 2012.
In the glass, The Armagh Shiraz displays a deep crimson to inky purple colour, opening with an intensely aromatic bouquet of blackberry, black cherry, dark plum and elderberry. Layers of liquorice, violet, sage, pepper and wild herbs add a distinctive savoury dimension, while dark chocolate, mocha, espresso and subtle roasted-nut notes bring richness and depth. Depending on vintage and maturity, nuances of graphite, tobacco, truffle, cedar and earthy spice can emerge, giving the wine a complex aromatic character that beautifully combines ripe fruit with the more savoury personality of mature Clare Valley Shiraz.
On the palate, Jim Barry ‘The Armagh’ Shiraz is powerful, concentrated and remarkably refined. An intense core of blackberry, blackcurrant, dark cherry, plum and raspberry fills the palate, supported by lively acidity and beautifully integrated tannins. Rich flavours of dark chocolate, liquorice, mocha and espresso develop through the mid-palate, accompanied by hints of sage, pepper, graphite and savoury earth. Oak contributes subtle layers of vanilla, cedar and smoky spice, adding complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The wine combines impressive density and power with a silky, controlled texture, creating a style that is both generous and sophisticated.
The finish is exceptionally long, firm and persistent, with fine-grained tannins carrying layers of blackberry, plum, liquorice, dark chocolate, graphite and savoury spice. Fresh acidity provides lift and balance, while the wine’s mineral and earthy character gradually becomes more pronounced toward the close. Its combination of concentrated fruit, fine tannin and structural freshness gives The Armagh outstanding cellaring potential, with the ability to evolve for decades while developing increasingly complex notes of tobacco, leather, earth, truffle and mature dark fruit.
Food Pairing: This powerful and structured Shiraz is an exceptional partner for rich, slow-cooked and grilled dishes. Pair it with dry-aged ribeye, grilled or roasted beef, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, braised beef cheeks, venison and richly flavoured game meats. It also works beautifully with smoky Australian barbecue, roasted meats, hearty stews and mature hard cheeses such as aged Cheddar. The wine’s dark fruit, acidity and firm tannins are particularly well suited to dishes with deep savoury flavours and generous richness.
Serving Suggestion: Serve at approximately 16–18°C to reveal the wine’s full aromatic and textural complexity. A young bottle benefits from 60–120 minutes of decanting, allowing its dense fruit, spice, chocolate and mineral character to open gradually. Serve in a large Bordeaux-style red wine glass to provide enough space for the powerful aromatics to develop and to appreciate the wine’s long, structured and elegant finish.
